Cocaine Abuse

health

Because the high is short-lived, usually subsiding within an hour, cocaine users will sometimes go on a multi-dose binge. This is usually followed by a crash.

Patients might have a single drug of choice or be cross-addicted to more than one substance.

COCAINE ADDICTION

health
Cocaine has become the second most used drug in the US. The National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA)  conducted a survey of US househoulds. They reported that in 1999, 3.7 million Americans (or 1.7%) claim to use cocaine at least once a month.

Cocaine comes in different forms, each of which can be abused differently:
Freebase
Smoked: Crack Cocaine
Chewed/eaten
Snorting/Sniffing

Cocaine affects the central nervous system. A typical high can last between 20 minutes to several hours depending on dosage, purity, and how it is taken.
Cocaine addiction is physical. But regular use can also lead to psychological dependency. That is why an effective drug treatment program will approach the problem from both these angles. Cocaine abuse can result in physiological damage, depression, and death.
